It's raining and windy outside today, so I've been inside, making these pouches for Miscellaneous Adventures. Some of them will be sent to those who backed the recent Kickstarter as rewards and some are off on an adventure to London. They are also available on the Miscellaneous Adventures shop, should you want one of your own.
Thanks to Totoro for the assistance.
We snuck away for 3 nights in Sweden last week. Two nights were spent here, in the middle of the forest only 2 hours from Stockholm but it felt like the middle of nowhere. We had a very cosy Log Cabin and a Wood Fired Sauna all to ourselves (if you don't count the wolves). It was the perfect escape.
1. Our Cabin, 2. Sign down to the stream, 3. Sauna on a frozen lake, 4. Me on the frozen lake
So, we went to Sweden and when we came home, I decided to make these Swedish Caramom buns.
We'd had them for 'Fika' (a Swedish word that basically means to drink coffee and eat a snack - it means more than that, but it's not a word that can be easily translated) from Fabrique in Södermalm. Anyway, they were delicious, so I wanted to make some.
They worked out pretty good and in case you want to have a go, I used this recipe.
I was asked to sew a piece for a friend recently to give as a birthday gift to his girlfriend.
He picked the lyrics, which I love.
The design is based on the first verse of God Only Knows, by the Beach Boys.
"I may not always love you,
But as long as there are stars above you,
You never need to doubt it,
I'll make you so sure about it.
God only knows what I'd be without you."
If you would like a bespoke embroidery to give as a gift, or just for you please email me!
You may have read about my daily project, And Sew For Today, in my previous post. Each day I am sewing a random word onto fabric and posting it to my Tumblr site. I've been using my back catalogue of scrap fabric for the project so far. My collection is either inherited, bought from charity shops and jumble sales or scavenged from various people and places and I'm running out!
This is where you come in...do you have any scraps of fabric hanging around that you might want to donate to my project? Most of my words fit onto postcard size scraps, so I'm not after yards and yards, just offcuts that you might not have any use for anymore.
I'd be hugely grateful for any donations. To donate, simply email me (hello[at]missemmaruth.co.uk) your address and I will send out a stamped addressed envelope that you can fill and post back to me! Be sure to include your name, website, twitter etc and I will publish it along with the word on Tumblr.
Please spread the word; I still have 294 days to go and need all the help I can get!
And Sew for Today is my new daily project. Each morning, I use a internet based random word generator to choose a word then I sew it, by hand. I'm not using patterns or pre-planning, just grabbing some fabric and thread and stitching the first thing that comes into my head. It's an experiment in typography, embroidery and fun.
I was lucky enough to inherit a lovely selection of threads, fabrics and haberdashery from my husband's Great Aunty Mary a couple of years ago. Ever since, I've been trying to think of how best to use it and this project seemed to be the perfect idea.
I'm not setting myself any strict deadlines and want to enjoy the project, so we'll see how it evolves over time. I'm hoping to create one, big final piece when I decide to stop, maybe after a year, 6 months - who knows.
I'd like to collaborate with other designers and artists and involve people using twitter and tumblr, so if you have any ideas or would like to collaborate in some way, get in touch! (email link at the bottom of the page).
For now, you can see the first 35 pieces on my tumblr. Hope you enjoy.
